About CTSI

Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) offers research support, tools and resources, consultative services, funding, training and education to Penn State researchers across the Commonwealth.

These efforts foster collaborations across disciplines to translate new discoveries into practice; connect basic and clinical scientists in the discovery of new treatments, procedures and ways to predict, prevent and treat disease; train new and existing health professionals and investigators; and to support research across the continuum, at all Penn State campuses, and for researchers at every stage of their learning and career.

Mission

Penn State CTSI's mission is to connect translational scientists and community partners to improve healthy living and health outcomes, by supporting research infrastructure through funding, training and education, community engagement, and collaborative programs across Penn State University and the Commonwealth.

The CTSI accomplishes its mission by providing research tools, advanced biostatistical expertise, pilot funding for programs exploring unique ideas, and a dedicated team to include the community more effectively in research. The Institute also trains the next generation of translational and clinical scientists. Through institute programs, Penn State has several opportunities for its medical and graduate students, including a dual degree in clinical and translational science. The institute also invests in Penn State’s early-career scientists through a program that helps faculty devote more time to their research, promotes collaboration and presents translational research basics.

Vision

Penn State CTSI's vision is to improve rural health by advancing translational science and scientists in partnership with communities to bring discoveries into practice.

The institute is a member of the National Institutes of Health Clinical and Translational Science Award Network (Grant: UL1 TR002014). It is one of three network members in Pennsylvania and focuses on the health needs of the rural communities surrounding Penn State and its academic health system, Penn State Health. The institute is one of seven interdisciplinary institutes under Penn State’s Office of the Senior Vice President for Research.
