Informatics & Artificial Intelligence
Penn State CTSI’s informatics team aims to advance data and computation-intensive translational research in biomedical and health sciences. This is achieved by building the right tools and systems for handling data, providing experts in data science and artificial intelligence (AI) and creating the necessary processes to analyze data. Informatics also offers support like idea labs, small pilot grants and consulting services to encourage teamwork between medical researchers and specialists in data science and AI. Additionally, CTSI informatics focuses on education and outreach to help clinical researchers understand the benefits and challenges of using AI in clinical and translational research.
CTSI’s informatics team is skilled in the latest machine learning (ML) and data science techniques, AI methods and data analytics pipelines. The team provides support for researchers at every step of their data-intensive biomedical and clinical studies, from planning to carrying out the project and sharing results.

Harnessing the Power of EHR Data and AI to Advance Biomedical Research
At this workshop, three research groups from Penn State College of Medicine discuss why and how they have applied AI methods in their research. Also shared are numerous resources available to all Penn State researchers through CTSI and ICDS, which include access to anonymized electronic health records data, cloud-based analysis tools, and a computational consulting team that supports data science and AI throughout the University.
Informatics Services
The CTSI’s informatics team is working to bring together different types of information, like health records and data about the environment and people’s living conditions. They’re doing this to create new ways to analyze this data, helping to predict and address real-world health issues. Services include:
Consultation on study design and feasibility assessment for Artificial Intelligence (AI)/ Machine Learning (ML) projects
Consultation on the choice of the appropriate for specific projects
Assistance with setting up or participating in multi-site studies with Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (or OHDSI, pronounced "Odyssey")
Assistance with cohort definition and data extraction
Consultation on data deidentification protocol for projects that need to integrate electronic health record data with other data, e.g., imaging data
Support for data preparation
Support for analysis of large data sets, including statistical characterization, prediction (AI/ML), and effect estimation
Support for model interpretation, interrogation, deployment, inference
Help with preliminary AI/machine Learning analysis in support of research proposal development
Help with Informatics, Data Science, AI/ML elements of a research plan
Periodic idea labs, seed grants, and AI/ML methods workshops
Investigators needing assistance with purely statistical questions, e.g., sample size estimates, identifying appropriate hypothesis testing procedures, etc., are advised to consult with biostatistics.
